The Card Trick
"Pick a card."
"What?"
Pick a card... any card."
"Why?"
"What else have you got to do to pass the time. C'mon... pick a
card."
"I'm not really into card tricks. Why don't you ask Chet?"
"Yeah, right. Like I'd waste a good card trick on Kelly."
"How 'bout Marco or Mike?"
"They won't play. C'mon, Roy... pick a card."
"You're worse than my kids, ya know. Can't I just read the paper in
peace?"
"Sheesh... everybody's a grump today. How come I'm the only one in a
good mood?"
"I've been wondering about that myself."
"What? Why everybody's grouchy?"
"No. Why you're not."
"Well, why should I be?"
"In case you haven't noticed, it's been pouring rain this whole
shift."
"So? At least we're not out in it. You guys should be happy about
that."
"I think that's the whole problem. We haven't been out on a call all
day, we're stuck inside... I think we're starting to get on each
other's nerves."
"Really? You really think there's anybody of this station you could
get tired of? Well, maybe Chet. Now I could get real tired of
Chet. But other than him, I can't think of anybody who could bother
me. What about you, Roy? Is Chet starting to wear a little thin for
you? Roy? You gonna answer my question? C'mon, Roy, you can tell
me. We're partners. Who's buggin' you today?"
"Where's that deck of cards?"
What? Oh, right here. Hey, you gonna do a card trick?"
"Yeah. Chris taught me this one. Move out of my way, I have to
stand over here away from the table. This is called 52 card pick up."
"Aw, Roy, that was low. That was really low. It's gonna take me
forever to pick up all these cards, and now I won't be able to show
you my card trick."
