He never saw it coming…
She was old. She was grey. She had a handbag. The last thing John Gage expected was for her to swing a Ruger to his temple, and pull back the trigger.
It was cold against his skin, which quickly became slick with anxious sweat. His eyes narrowed, darting to her face. She must have noticed his incredulous expression.
“Why?” He asked quietly.
“It’s the only way to get attention these days, “ She replied.
Her crinkly voice was sharp, sent a prickling chill over him. He looked down, drops of sweat dripped from his face to the floor.
“I don’t understand, “ he said softly. “I came here to help you.”
“Sorry son, but I don’t need your kind of help. But I’m going to help myself through you.”
The muzzle pressed painfully against his head. He could feel his heart beating heavily in his chest, and felt vaguely dizzy.
He looked into her eyes, and worried he wouldn’t get out of this one alive.

He never saw it coming...Johnny Gage and Roy DeSoto were responding to a call of
officer down. They arrived at the market and were met by their friend Vince
Howard.
"What's up Vince?" Johnny asked.
"Sgt. Williams walked in on a robbery and was shot."
"How bad?" Johnny asked as they grabbed the necessary equipment.
"She seems to be doing OK."
"She?" Johnny asked as they walked into the store.
"She." He heard a female voice reply and then he looked into the prettiest blue
eyes that he'd ever seen.
"He's gone." Roy told Vince.
"Yep."
"Hi, I'm Johnny."
"I'm Shawna. I told Vince that this wasn't too bad but he called you guys anyways."
"Well, let's just take a look anyway." He replied with a smile. He knew right
then that he'd found the woman of his dreams.

He never saw it coming, but should have. After all, Roy had made moves to leave
the paramedics before during their long partnership. But to have it happen like
this was almost more than Johnny could handle.
"When?"
"During the next exam." Roy frowned at Johnny's feeble attempt to look
supportive. "I'm sorry, Johnny, but Chris graduates from high school in two
years. I..."
"...need the money," Johnny finished the sentence. "Yeah, I know. It's okay,
Roy, it's just a surprise."
"You could take the exam, too."
"Me? A captain? Yeah, like that would ever happen."
"C'mon, why not?"
Johnny thought about that question for a few moments. "You know something?
You're right. Why not? What do I have to lose?" I'm already losing a partner.
"So, we study together? Take the exam together?"
Johnny took a deep breath before nodding decisively. "Yeah, together."

Ouch!

He never saw it coming. . .
The party had been going great. Roy DeSoto had invited him over for little
Jennifer’s birthday party and thus far everything had gone smoothly for all.
That is until it was time for the. . . piñata.
John Gage had done as everyone else. He’d stood back and left plenty of room for
the children to swing the stick at the papier-mâché donkey. But he never counted
on the extra strong arm of Billy Balooga. The kid swung with all his might. And
a mighty swing it was. The candy shot through the air like no one had ever seen
before. John hadn’t even had time to duck as the many pieces of wrapped bubble
gum assaulted him. But it was the jawbreaker. . .the candy that looked like a
planet up close to the eye…directly in front of his. . . that got him. Nailed
him good. He looked in the mirror at the small bruise just under his eye.
“Jawbreaker? Ha!”

He never saw it coming, but he felt the bullet as it ripped into his skin. He
grimaced in pain but he continued to advance on the line of boys in gray, and
heard the sound of his own scream as it joined in with
the other men around him who charged the rebel battle line. He was deafened by
the thunderous sounds of cannons and the whizzing of bullets through the air.
The smell of blood, was thick in his nostrils and he had to wonder if it was his
own. His legs began to feel heavy as if something was bogging him down. His
heart beat heavy in his chest as his lungs fought for just one more breath of
air, and then he fell.
He wondered if this is what death felt like, as his breathing began to slow and
he moaned with the pain in his chest. His forehead was drenched in a cold sweat,
as he felt the thump as the ground shook under him from more cannon fire. He
felt someone shaking him, “Johnny, wake up!”
He opened his eyes to see the entire crew of Station 51 looking at him.
“You had a bad dream.”
“Man, what a dream, I was in the middle of the Battle of Bull Run and I’d been
shot, and I think I was dying.”
Chet shook his head, “Only you.”
Stanley looked at him, “That’s it. No more Civil War movies and chocolate ice
cream and peanut butter if it’s going to affect you this way.”
All Johnny could mutter was an apologetic sorry as the rest of the crew went
back to bed.

Johnny's Dilemma
by Jen B.
He never saw it coming......(How could I, I mean I'm the one who asks...I mean...not the other way around) "Roy, is their something wrong with me?"
"You mean more so then usual"
"Funny, very funny, I'm serious Roy, what is wrong with me"
"As usual partner, I have no idea what your talking about, are you sick or
something?"
"No, I'm not sick Roy, but something is going on....I mean what's different with
me?"
"Different, you mean different then you usually are?
"Roy, why do you answer everything with a question?"
"Johnny, what IS the matter, you went back into the ER and got the supplies we
forgot and you were fine, then you came back out like....like this, why
partner?"
"Why, you want to know why?"
"Yea, why?"
"OK, I'll tell ya why?"
"Oh good....ok"
"You know that cute little nurse that I've been drooling over for weeks and was
too afraid to ask her out!"
"Yea"
"Well she just asked me out....Roy...ME!!!"
"Yea, well...that's good isn't it?"
"Roy, you just don't understand"
"Johnny, your from another planet, lets get back to the station"
The end......

He never saw it coming...
He heard the *sprong* of the cleverly loaded spring only an instant
before he felt the cold water smack him full in the face. He stood there
dripping, hearing the hearty guffaws in the dayroom where Chet
had stationed himself to see the full effect of his hidden surprise.
*Great, just great. I'm never gonna live this down. I thought a new station a
new start. How come it's always me who gets picked on? Do I have a big target on
my back.*
"Johnny!"
He glanced up in surprise in time to catch the towel that his new partner tossed
him. Roy was smiling, but not in glee. His face showed that he saw the fun in
the prank, but he also understood how out of hand this kind of thing could get.
Johnny felt a returning smile play on his face. Well, if he had to be 51's
pigeon, at least he'd have a sympathetic ear to bend about it.

He never saw it coming.
Gage was in his Land Rover in the middle of the intersection with no place to
go. The impact of the other car sounded like a bomb, and it sent his vehicle
spinning, twisting, careening out of control. The screech of tortured metal was
excrutiating in its sheer volume.
Finally, the crushed and abused vehicle came to a stop resting against a
telephone pole. Its windows empty maws of broken glass. A certain quiet
descended, like the calm before the storm.

He Never Saw it Coming ...
It was after 1 a.m. on a Saturday night and the men of Squad 51 knew it was only
a matter of time before the drunks who had just gotten out of the bars would
start crashing into each other - or into someone or something else.
Sure enough, paramedics Roy DeSoto and John Gage, along with the Engine 51 crew,
received the call just before 2 a.m. for a 23-year-old male who had driven his
car into a telephone pole.
The patient was unconscious on the scene and the rescuers quickly extricated him
from the vehicle, packaged him on a spine board, and placed him in the ambulance
for transport to the hospital - Johnny riding in back with the patient and Roy
bringing in the squad.
On the way, the patient started rouse. He was confused, disoriented, and
combative. In an instant, Johnny recognized the look of a patient who was about
to ...
It was too late. Johnny had stood up in the back of the ambulance and grabbed
the spine board to turn the patient on his side, so he wouldn't choke on his
vomit. Good for the patient - not for Gage. The barf went everywhere - Johnny's
shirt, his pants, even his shoes.
When Roy saw his partner at the hospital he had to stifle a laugh. "Very funny,"
sighed Johnny, heading to the men's room.

Firefighter John Gage never saw it coming. The fifth water bomb
of the day! How come this kept happening to him? Why couldn’t’ the phantom hit
someone else for a change? Like Cap! Now that would be funny. He’d love to see
Chet squirm his way out of that one. What would he say, "Oh sorry, Cap. That was
meant for Gage?" Yep, that would be fun.
Maybe, just maybe, he could set up his own bomb and somehow maneuver Hank into
being on the receiving end. Surely everyone would believe it had been Chet.
Yeah, that sounded like a plan. Unfortunately, he’d need an accomplice to pull
it off. Roy would never go for it, and he was pretty sure Stoker wouldn’t agree,
that left Marco? Okay, how does one convince a co-worker to pull a prank on
one’s own Captain with the intent on another co-worker being falsely accused.
This would take some major brain power.
First, get Marco alone and explain the plan to him. He, Johnny, would set the
water bomb up and somehow Marco would walk Cap into it. Boy if they could pull
this off there’d be fireworks for sure! He could just envision Captain Stanley’s
face as he looked into the stocky fireman’s innocent looking face. Cap would
never believe Chet’s pleas of innocence. How delicious this would be.
Johnny caught Marco in his peripheral vision and hurried to his side. "Hey,
Marco, what you doing?"
Marco Lopez looked skeptically at this shiftmate, "I was going to dust the
dayroom. You gonna help?"

"The Pigeon"
by Wanda CH
He never saw it coming, but he should have as many times as it had happened to him before this one! Chet was ready for Johnny to make an entrance into the dining area of the fire station. The Phantom had a water bomb ready for his favorite pigeon. Johnny was telling Roy about his latest nurse conquest and suddenly...bam...right in the face. Chet hit Johnny with the biggest, wettest water bomb that he had ever assembled. Johnny turned to his partner, Roy, asking him if he could believe what Chet just did to him?
Roy replied, "Once a pigeon, always a pigeon!"
Johnny looked at his friend with a sideways grin and promised that The Phantom
would get his! One of these days when Chet least expected it, bam, John would
get his revenge. Roy had no doubt that his friend would try, but would he
succeed? Only time would tell....

Trouble Magnet
by
Purry
He never saw it coming...as the ground gave way and darkness replaced light.
When he finally woke from his sudden nap, he could hear his name being called,
but didn't have the awareness to answer. He faded back into the shadows.
Roy, on hands and knees, peered into the hole that had swallowed his partner,
yelling Johnny's name, over and over, but only silence answered. Pulling out his
handi-talkie, Roy summoned the help he'd need to rescue his trouble magnet
partner.
Later...
Johnny came to, just as the male nurse was finishing with his bath...
