In or Out?

How was he going to get out of this?

One day at Station 51 John Gage and the rest of A-Shift were watching ‘The Dating Game’ on television, and the next thing he knew, he was up against a dare by crew member Chet Kelly to go on the show.

Now here he sat on a stage, behind a divider with two other guys on stools, waiting for the questioning to begin.

All sorts of questions were running through his mind. Would the girl choosing them be cute? Would she be a dog? Of course, he’d never seen a dog on the show before.

Knowing my luck, this’ll be a first.

But what if she was an incredible chic who picked him and then she was disappointed?  Would she take one look at him and frown in front of the live audience and everyone watching the show when it aired in a few days?  How would he ever live that down if so?

When he’d signed up for the show, he was given the choice of being the selector or the selectee. . .knowing he  tended to freeze up in front of a television camera, he’d opted for the role with less speaking and less time on camera, one of the bachelors for the choosing.

What also played in the decision was that he didn’t want the pressure of trying to figure out if a hot sounding  chic was just that or if  voices were deceiving and he’d end up selecting a dog. That he’d never live down for sure.

John glanced at the other two men, one on each side of him, and wondered if perhaps he should have asked to be bachelor number one or three instead of keeping quiet when the producers told him he was going to be bachelor number two. Was two picked more often when the choice was a toss-up?

He knew when it came to bathrooms the second stall or second urinal in line seemed to be the first choice for most people. It was just a known fact. Just one of those crazy things about human behavior that didn’t seem to have much reasoning to it. Would choosing a date follow that pattern? Thus, would he be settled on?

That’s not what I’d call winning. . .

He glanced at his watch. The show would be starting at any minute according to the time they’d been given.

Once again the thought ran through his mind. How was he going to get out of this?

Then suddenly the music started, the show’s host, Jim Lange, was introduced and before he knew it, things were underway.

He wasn’t going to get out of it.

Two days later, John was back on duty and explaining to the guys on both C and A-shift what had happened.

“One question got me picked.”

“You mean one answer, right?” Chet said.

“Nope, one question. An’ you know what it was?”

“The show hasn’t aired yet, so how could we?” Tom Dwyer from C-shift asked.

John ignored the question and supplied, “She asked, ‘If I was trapped on the second floor of a burning building, would you come save me?’. Bachelor number three,” he explained as he held up three fingers of his right hand, “had a long pause before hesitantly answering, ‘Yeeees’. Number one,” he continued, just his right index finger up for emphasis, “asked her, ‘how high are the flames?’.” He grinned with his hands now on his hips as he proudly went on with, “And of course I said, ‘Sure! An’ I’d put out the flames on the way up!’”

“So it was your answer,” Marco said.

“Well, yeah, but more than that, it was the question. The question revealed the other two guys weren’t about to risk it all ta save her.” He shrugged. “So she picked me. An’ she’s incredible!”

He sure was glad he didn’t get out of it now.
