A child's eyes are looking
For the craziness to cease,
For mom or dad to reappear
To bring them inner peace.
A child's eyes are stricken
With an overwhelming fear,
As strangers rush and teem about
In uniforms and gear.
A child's eyes begin to fill
With teardrops yet unshed;
Trembling lips and reddened cheeks,
On shaky ground they tread.
A calming voice, a gentle smile -
Essential when I'm working;
So hard to keep it all together, but
A child's eyes are looking.
