Double Date

By Mychand

Roy Desoto strolled into the locker room where his partner was already dressed and ready for work.  “Wow, you’re early.  I thought you had a hot date last night?”

“Roy, I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Why, was it that bad? I thought Chet said this one was really beautiful?”

“She was but…..Roy I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Okay, okay.” Roy replied as he buttoned up his shirt and tied his shoes. “Let’s get going.  We don’t want to be late for roll call.”

After roll call the crew sat around and completed some paperwork that the captain had assigned them to do.

“Come on Johnny. I know you’re ignoring me,” commented Chet.  “I didn’t know.  Really, I didn’t.”

“Chet, I don’t want to talk about it.  Roy, just remind me never to go on a blind date with Chet Kelly ever again.”

Roy laughed. “Okay, I’ll do that but something tells me you won’t listen.”

“Oh, you better believe I’ll listen. I learned my lesson this time.”

“Johnny, how many times do I have to tell you that I didn’t know?”

“Forget it Chet. I’ll just know better next time.”

The captain spoke up. “Alright, now even I’m curious.  What exactly happened on your double date?”

“Alright, I’ll tell ya.  I met this girl.  She was beautiful just as Chet said but she was crazy.  We went to the amusement park.  I asked her if she was hungry and she said no.  So, I told her to wait for me while I got something to eat. I came back and she told me that she’s hungry.  So, I gave her my food and went back to get something else.  I came back again and the food’s gone and she said she’s changed her mind and she’s hungry.  I was about to ask her about the food I just gave her but decided that would be rude. So, I got more food.  When I got back, she wasn’t hungry anymore. She
got mad that I thought she’d eat that much.  Can you believe that?”

“Sounds like she’s just a bit indecisive,” said Roy.

“Oh, she was more than that,” replied Johnny.

“Well, go ahead, finish your story,” prodded Chet.

“Then we went to the Ferris wheel. She said she loves it and really wants to ride it.  So, I went and bought us some tickets. When I got back, she said she doesn’t like heights and wouldn’t be caught dead on that thing.  By this
time I didn’t care how beautiful she was, I was getting a little annoyed.”

“Maybe that was her way of flirting with you,” replied Mike.

“Oh, she wasn’t flirting.  She was just having fun at my expense. Isn’t that right, Chet?”

“I told you, Gage. I really didn’t know. Honestly, I didn’t.”

“So, what happened next?” asked Marco.

“Well, I went back and they were nice enough to refund my tickets.  Then I met back up with her and she was mad that I didn’t get tickets so we could ride the damn thing. I was about to lose my mind.”

“She does sound like some kind of psycho,” commented the captain.

“That wasn’t it,” replied Chet. “I still swear I didn’t know, Johnny.”

“Chet, I have a hard time believing that.  Anyway, I told her that I’d try to win her a stuffed animal.  She seemed to forget about the Ferris wheel pretty quick.  I spent fifty bucks and finally won this pink bear for her.”

“Well, that was nice of you,” said Roy.  “Not your usual cheap self. She must have been good looking.”

Johnny smirked. “Oh, ha ha.  She was pretty and yeah, even though she was acting weird, I thought I’d impress her.  Of course, it didn’t last long.”

“I’d say,” laughed Chet.

Johnny shot Chet a dirty look. “Anyway, I excused myself and went to the restroom.  When I came back she was sitting at the table with Chet and his date but the bear was gone.”

“What happened to it?” asked Mike.

“Well, that’s what I asked her. You know what she said?  She asked me what bear I was talking about and then proceeded to pull me back to the game booth to win her one.”

“I’d have run right then,” said Roy.  “That girl sounds like a nut.”

“Oh, there’s more to the story.  Anyway, I spent another fifty bucks but couldn’t win another one.  She got so upset.  She started yelling at me and telling me that it wasn’t fair that I won her sister one and not her. Can you believe that?”

Roy couldn’t resist. “Her sister? They were twins!”

“You got it. Twins!  They were playing me all night long. I spent a hundred bucks and didn’t even get one good night kiss.  They won’t date a guy that both of them like.  Can you believe that?”

"Wait a minute, Gage,” said the captain. “You’re not upset that you were played for a fool by twins? You’re just upset that they won’t date a guy they both like?”

Johnny grinned. “Well, yeah. They both liked me. Who cares if they’re  twins?”

Roy rolled his eyes. “Oh brother. No wonder you’re still single. Chet, be my guest. Take him on all the blind dates you want.  Somehow, I think he deserves it.”

Chet laughed. “Ya know, that was the best practical joke I’ve ever pulled and I didn’t even have a thing to do with it.”
