An Engineer’s Enigma

(The Prequel to “A Prank Gets Personal)

By Canadagal

(When I wrote A Prank Gets Personal, I paired Johnny Gage with Mike Stoker’s sister.  I never imagined that I would be asked how these two came to be a couple.  I want to thank Ofelia for the inspiration that led me to write a prequel explaining how the biggest flirt in the department was allowed to marry Mike’s baby sister.)

“Station 51, Captain Stanley Speaking” came the formal voice of the Captain of the A Shift.  “Sure just hang on”  he said as he held the phone away from his ear.

“Mike you’re wanted on the phone,” he said as he held the phone out to his engineer.  Mike walked over and grabbed it from his captain.

“Hello,” Mike said as he put the phone to his ear.  “No I can’t do that.  I’m sorry but I’m  working OT that day,” Mike said, shaking his head.    “Hang on let me check,” he said as he held the phone away.

“Marco is there anyway you could help my mother move a dresser tomorrow?” he asked, looking at his friend.

“Sorry Mike I would normally but I’m  taking my Mother shopping,” Marco said apologetically.

“Roy?” Mike was hoping.   Roy shook his head.  “Sorry Mike  I’m working over at station 24 tomorrow,” Roy said.

Mike sighed.  The last two people he wanted to ask were Johnny or Chet.    Chet looked up from his newspaper.  “I’m going fishing with a buddy.  We’re leaving right after work,” he said before Mike could even ask.

Johnny smirked at Mike.  “Guess that leaves me,” he said, “and sure I’ll help your mom with the dresser,” he said.  “What time did she need me over there at?” Johnny asked.

“Thanks Johnny,” Mike said, “she said she needs you there around 9.  Is that too early?” Mike asked.

“Not at all.  I’ll just head there after my shift here,.” Johnny said. “Tell your mom I’ll be there at 9 am sharp”

Chet snickered, “Johnny you’re never prompt for work, what makes you think you will be prompt on your day off?”

Johnny just snorted at him but didn’t offer a reply.

After Mike hung up the phone he handed Johnny the address to his mother’s house.  “I appreciate this Johnny. My mom wants to put the dresser in her sewing room but it’s all the way in the basement,” Mike explained. “I know if I didn’t find someone to help she and my little sister would do it themselves”

“Well don’t worry about it.  I’ll get it done first thing tomorrow,” Johnny said as he stuffed the address in his wallet and returned to the newspaper he was reading.

The shift was steady but not hectic and the men from station 51 were able to get a pretty decent night sleep.

Johnny was up and gone right at 8 am.  He showered and changed at the station before heading over to Mike’s mother’s house.  He checked his watch.  It was exactly 9 am when he knocked at the door.

A very pleasant looking older woman answered the door.  “Good Morning.  You must be Johnny Gage,” she said holding out her hand.

“Yes Ma’am.  Mike said you would be expecting me,” Johnny said politely as he shook her hand gently.

“Well come on in,” she said as she stepped back to allow him inside.   “I really appreciate it.  I tried to move that dresser myself and ended up bruising my wrist,” she said as he looked at her arm.

“You sure it’s just a bruise Mrs. Stoker?” Johnny asked, instantly going into paramedic mode.

“I’m  sure it’s just fine,” she smiled.  “Now come and get a cup of coffee and some breakfast before I put you to work,” she said as she pointed the way down the hall to the kitchen.

“That’s not necessary Mrs. Stoker,” Johnny tried to protest.

“Oh yes it is.  I know you boys just got off shift and you haven’t had time to eat,” she said, “and Michael has told me about your terrific appetite”

Johnny blushed slightly, “Well I guess I appreciate Mike’s good cooking,” he stammered out.  The two walked into the kitchen and found the meal almost ready.

“Johnny Gage I would like you to meet Laurie, my daughter,”  Mrs. Stoker said as she introduced Johnny to Mike’s baby sister.

“You’re Mike’s baby sister?” Johnny said, grinning.

“Baby sister?” Laurie said rolling her eyes.  “When is Michael going to stop calling me that” she sighed. “I’m a college graduate with a law degree and he still calls me his baby sister”

“Well I guess it’s just a protective thing,” Johnny said, trying to defend his friend.

Laurie shook her head. “You firemen are all alike.  You would die by the sword defending each other” she smirked.

“Well you sit here Johnny” Mrs. Stoker motioned to the empty place setting at the table.  “I’ll  have breakfast ready in a jiffy”

“Thanks Mrs. Stoker, it smells great.” Johnny said.

Soon the table was filled with delicious food and the three sat down to eat.  Johnny enjoyed the warm banter between Mother and daughter as each seems intent on stuffing him as full as he could ever remember being.  Finally Johnny put his hand up in protest.

“I can’t eat another bite,” he said, as he pushed his plate away.  “If I do I won’t be able to move that dresser and I’ll  need to take a nap right here at your kitchen table”

“Well we can always throw a blanket over you and use you as an extra chair,” Laurie teased.

“No that’s okay.  I think I better get that dresser moved so you can organize your sewing room,” Johnny said getting to his feet.

Mrs. Stoker walked with Johnny down the hall and led him up two flights of stairs.  “Here’s the sewing room,” she said showing Johnny the small space she had designated for her hobby.

“Well the hard part is that the dresser is in the basement,” she said.  “It’s up three flights of stairs,” she apologized.

“Don’t worry about it” Johnny smiled warmly. “It will do me good to work off some of the food I just packed away,” he said patting his tummy.  “I need to fit into my uniform pants”

“Oh I don’t think you have any trouble fitting into your pants from what I can see,” Laurie Stoker said as she walked in.   For some reason the normally cocky paramedic found her to be a little unnerving and was instantly flustered.

“Well uh, we better get to the basement,” he stammered as he turned to follow Mrs. Stoker out of the room.

The three headed down the three flights of stairs to a cramped basement.  “There’s the dresser,” Mrs. Stoker said, pointing to a hi-boy style dresser.  Johnny walked over and eyed it carefully.  “It’s made of some very nice wood,” he observed.

“I think it’s oak,” Mrs. Stoker said as she ran her hand over it.  “I got it from my mother years ago,” she said.

“It’s definitely a beautiful piece of furniture,” Johnny commented.  “Well I better get it ready to move,” he said as he started to remove the drawers.

He stacked them carefully in a pile and tilted the dresser on its side.  In a matter of a few minutes he had the dresser carefully relocated in the sewing room three flights up.    “Is there anything else you would like moved while I’m  here?” Johnny asked.

“No I don’t want to impose on your  time any longer,” Mrs. Stoker said quickly.  “You have already been more than kind”

“It’s no imposition.  I was only going home to do laundry and believe me this is more fun than washing dirty uniforms,” he said.  “I have a stack of them in my Rover to get cleaned,” he said.

“Why don’t you bring them in and I’ll clean them for you” Mrs. Stoker offered. “I have some other laundry to do already,” she explained

“Oh ma’am I can’t have you cleaning my clothes” Johnny protested. “I’ll get to them later”

“Would you stop with the ma’am thing.  My name is Mom or Mildred.  Ma’am sounds so stuffy,” Mrs. Stoker said.

Johnny's  face instantly flushed.  “I haven’t called anyone Mom in years.  Ever since my parents died” he stammered.  “So what else did you need done around here?” he asked, trying to change the subject.

“Well I have some canning jars that are in the attic that I’d love to have and there are a few boxes to move to the basement,” Mrs. Stoker said.

Well let’s get to them” he said enthusiastically.

“Not so fast Johnny.  The laundry,” Laurie said, reading her mother’s mind.   Johnny grabbed the bag of laundry from the Rover and came back inside.  He handed it to Laurie and she headed to the basement ahead of them.  Laurie started to pull the smoky uniforms out of the bag as Johnny started to move the boxes to where Mrs. Stoker wanted them.  Johnny's  face was crimson when he spotted his boxers being tossed in the pile with the rest of the clothes.

Laurie raised her eyebrows.  “I guess that answers the question, do firemen wear boxers or briefs,”  she laughed.

“Laurie stop teasing” Mrs. Stoker scolded her youngest child.

“Sorry Mom but I couldn’t help myself,” she said as she started the washing machine.   Johnny turned to continue stacking the boxes for Mrs. Stoker.

“Where do you want these boxes Mrs. I mean Mom?” Johnny stammered out.

Mrs. Stoker smiled. “Over here is fine,” she said, pointing to a corner of the room.  Johnny worked for the next 4 hours moving boxes and helping to arrange the basement for Mrs. Stoker.

By the time they were finished with the basement it was almost 3 in the afternoon.  “Look at the time” Mrs. Stoker said apologetically.  “I have wasted half your day”

Johnny shook his head. “No big deal.  I’m  glad I could help,” he said sincerely.  “It’s been nice to be in a family home again” he added.

“Well Johnny you have to stay for supper.  I’ll  have it ready in about an hour” Mrs. Stoker offered.

“I’d love to but I have to go and put my horses in for the night.  It looks like its going to rain outside and I don’t like them in the pasture in a storm,” Johnny said, looking outside.

“You have horses?” Laurie asked, her interest peaked.

“Yeah I have 2 horses.  Cherokee and Sparks,” Johnny said.

“Why don’t you two go and take care of those horses and then come back for supper,” Mrs. Stoker suggested.

“That’d be fun. I’d love to see a horse up close,” Laurie said.  “Being a city girl I’ve never been any closer then the ones I see in a parade”

Johnny started to laugh.  “Well come on then.  Let me show you one up close,” he said as he reached naturally for her hand. He stopped to look at the denim skirt she was waiting.  “Oh you might want to change.  Skirts and horses really don’t mix,” he said.

“Be right back,” she said as she dashed up stairs to change.  She was back shortly in a pair of jeans  “Better?” she asked.

“Much,” Johnny said.

“Well you two take your time.  I’ll  have supper ready by 6:30,” Mrs. Stoker told the pair.  Johnny and Laurie headed out the door and ran to Johnny's  Rover.  20 minutes later Johnny pulled into his ranch.

He went to open the door for Laurie and the pair headed off to the pasture.  “There they are,” Johnny said pointing to his two prides and joys.  “Cheyenne and Sparks”

“They are beautiful,” Laurie said admiring the fine looking animals.   “Do you get to ride them much?”

“As often as I can,” he told her.  “I like to take them into the hills so they can really have a good work out”

Laurie looked at her watch.  It was only 4’oclock.  “Would you have time to take me for a little ride?” she asked.

“You want to?” Johnny asked.

“Yeah but I have never been on a horse before,” she told him.

“No problem.  Why don’t I saddle up Cheyenne and we can ride double” Johnny suggested.

“That sounds like a good idea.  I was wondering how I was going to steer one of these things,” Laurie joked.

Soon Johnny had the horse saddled up and the two were heading off into the pasture.  The two rode in silence as Laurie took in the beauty of Johnny's  land. “This place is gorgeous,” she gushed as she looked at the wide open spaces.

“Well it’s the next best thing to Montana,” Johnny said, as he remembered growing up in at a spacious ranch.

“You’re from Montana?” Laurie asked.

“Yeah I lived there until I was 18 and then I came here to become a fireman,” Johnny said.  “My folks knew from the time I could talk that I wanted to be a fireman.  All my friends talked about being ranchers and breaking horses.  I talked about fighting fires” Johnny talked on and on about his childhood. “I guess I have a bit of both now that I have the ranch”

“Sounds like you had your life figured out a long time ago,” Laurie said.

“Well almost.  I never planned on my parents being killed in a traffic accident.  I never realized how much I counted on their support until they were gone,” Johnny said somberly.  He realized how serious he had become.  “Hey enough about me and my sad tales, how about you?   You said you’re a lawyer.  Was that always your dream?” Johnny asked.

“I have always liked to debate things so I guess as a lawyer I get paid to do it,” she said grinning.

“Well I certainly have to tell Mike his baby sister is no baby anymore,” Johnny said, giving Laurie an appreciative glance.

Now it was Laurie’s turn to blush.    “Michael is so overprotective it’s crazy,” she complained.  “Every time I wanted to come by the station to see where he worked he would tell me it was a bad time,” she said. “Do you know I have never seen the inside of a fire station and Michael’s been a fireman for almost 9 years”

“You’re kidding,” Johnny said shocked.

“No I’m not.  I’ve always wanted to see inside one, but I think if Michael has it his way the only way I’m  going to see one is if I see one in a movie,” Laurie said.

“Well how about you come by and see me some time.  Mike can’t stop me from inviting you to visit,” Johnny suggested.

“Are you sure you want to risk the wrath of my brother by doing that?” Laurie asked.

“He doesn’t scare me,” Johnny smirked.  “I’m  working on Saturday, come on by after lunch.  I’ll  give you the grand tour.” Johnny offered.  “Providing we don’t get toned out., that is”

“Sounds like fun.  I’d love to come,” Laurie said.  She looked down at her watch.  “Oh no it’s almost 6.  We better get back .  We’re  going to be so late for supper,” she said.

Johnny kicked his horse into a gallop so they could get back to the ranch quicker.  After cooling Cheyenne down and putting him in his stall for the night the two dashed back to Johnny's  Rover.

It was almost 7 by the time the two pulled back up to the Stoker house.  They were laughing and joking as they walked back inside.  “Sorry we’re late Mom,” Laurie called as they walked in.

Mrs. Stoker walked out of the kitchen wiping her hands on a towel.  “Did you two have fun?” she asked.  The answer very obvious on the two young people’s faces.

“Mom it was great.  Johnny took me for a ride on his horse.  We rode into the trails.  It’s amazing out there” Laurie rattled on and on.

“Sounds like you had fun,” Mrs. Stoker smiled.  “Well why don’t you two get washed up and I’ll  put supper on the table,” she said as she turned back to the kitchen.

Within 15 minutes the three were sitting down to a delicious meal.  “This is wonderful Mom” Johnny said kindly.  “I haven’t had this good of a meal since. . .” he paused and blew out a breath, “since my mom died,” he finally finished his sentence.

“Well Johnny I’m  touched that I’m  in the same league as someone who obviously was a wonderful lady,” Mrs. Stoker said softly.

“She was,” Johnny nodded.

The meal continued on with a light gentle tone to it.  The three seemed to relax and really enjoy each others’ company.  Mrs. Stoker seemed to see a genuine interest between Laurie and Johnny and she liked what she saw.

Finally it was getting late. “Well I guess I better head home.  It’s been a great day” Johnny said as he kissed Mrs. Stoker on the cheek.  “Thanks for letting me call you mom,” he said.  “It feels nice”

“Well Johnny I have this feeling I’ll  be seeing a lot more of you,” she said, nodding to her daughter.

“I hope so” Johnny agreed looking at Laurie.

“Well good night,” he said as he walked out the door and headed to his vehicle.  He had a real spring to his step as he climbed behind the wheel.

When he got home the reality of it him.  ‘this is Mike’s sister I’m  thinking about.  I can’t ask her out, can I?’  he thought to himself.  He brushed away the idea of seeing Laurie again.  He stuck to home the next day cleaning the barn and tending to his lawn.

Early in the evening the phone rang. “Hello” Johnny answered the phone.

“Hey Johnny I want to thank you for helping my mom out.  She said you were really sweet and stuck around and helped for a good part of the day,” Mike said.

“She’s a wonderful lady. I was glad to help,” Johnny said, neglecting to mention that he also enjoyed meeting Mike’s sister.

“Well I’ll  see you at work tomorrow,” Mike said, sensing that there really wasn’t much more to say.

“Yeah, talk to you tomorrow,” Johnny said hanging up the phone.

Johnny was at work early the next day.  He headed into the locker room and hung up his spare uniforms.  There was barely enough time to grab a cup of coffee before the squad was toned out.

“Going to be one of those days,” Roy said as he jumped behind the wheel.  Johnny and Roy were hoping from call to call all morning.  They finally made it back to the station just before 1 in the afternoon.  When Roy backed in he noticed the engine still wasn’t back.

“Guess that fire was worse than they thought,” Roy said, recalling where the Engine had been toned out to.

“Guess so.  Hope they at least left lunch before they left,” Johnny said. “I’m starved”  He walked into the kitchen and started to snoop for something to eat.  He scowled when he saw that the oven was empty and there was nothing prepared in the fridge.

“I guess Marco didn’t have a chance to make anything before they left,” Johnny said as he started to search through the fridge for something to eat.  A tap at the side door startled him.

He turned around and saw Laurie standing at the door.  He went over and opened the door.  “Hi,” Johnny said, smiling.

“Well hi yourself.  I guess I lucked out you were here,” Laurie said.  “Where’s Michael?” she asked.

“The engine is still at a call and in case Johnny doesn’t close his jaw enough to speak, I’m Roy, his partner,” Roy said offering his hand to shake Laurie’s.

“Oh yeah.  This is Laurie Stoker, Mike’s sister,” Johnny said when he finally found his tongue again.

“Nice to meet you Roy.  Michael has spoken of you often,” she added.  “So are you going to show me around this station?” Laurie asked, looking at Johnny.

“Oh yeah the tour,” Johnny said as he composed himself again.  Roy shook his head and shot Johnny a warning look as he watched the pair head out of the kitchen.  He could hear them chattering through the station as Johnny gave the most thorough tour of his firefighting career.

When the pair reappeared in the kitchen Roy had prepared lunch for the station.  He was just putting the dishes on the table when he heard the engine backing in.  Laurie dashed to the doorway to watch her brother back in the rig.  “Not bad,” she smirked.  “At least he didn’t scuff the tires like he did on my car,” she laughed.

Laurie went back to the table and sat down at the spot where she had left her coffee cup.  When the guys started to walk in they had no idea there was a lady in the station.

“I can’t believe how stupid some dames are,” Chet started to say as he was following Marco into the kitchen.  “How can a dumb woman leave the stove on and just forget about it?” he asked, as he suddenly froze in his tracks.

“I don’t think women are stupid,” Laurie said as she calmly sipped her coffee.

Chet looked at Laurie and felt a little awkward.  “Gage you know how the Cap feels about you bringing your dates to the station, even if she is a hot looking chick like you are,” Chet said, raising his eyebrows at Laurie.

Mike walked around the corner and stopped in his tracks.  He heard the comment that Chet had just spoke and was looking to get a glimpse of the woman Johnny had in the kitchen.

“Laurie what are you doing here?” Mike asked, surprised to see his sister.

“Johnny offered to show me the station,” Laurie said. “I have only waited 9 years for you to show me one,” she added.

“Well um we don’t usually have visitors in the station,” Mike stammered.

“That’s bull.  Just last week the Cap had his wife’s garden club here.  Week before that Roy’s daughter’s brownie troop was here and Marco’s family has been through the station on many different occasions,”  Johnny said.

“Well Laurie I think it’s time for you to go now, isn’t it?” Mike said slightly perturbed.

“No I don’t have to go yet,” she stared back at Michael.  “Johnny invited me to stay for lunch and I’m starved”

Mike glared at Johnny.  The tension between them was so thick you could have cut it with a knife.  Laurie took her time enjoying the meal as she got to know the different members of the A Shift.  Finally she looked at her watch and said she better go.  “Can you walk me out Johnny?” she asked, looking at the sexy paramedic.

“Sure,” Johnny said, jumping to his feet.  Mike was burning a hole in Johnny's  back as the couple walked out to the parking lot.

“Michael is going to be so mad at you,” Laurie warned Johnny.  “He doesn’t think I’m  old enough to date and especially not firemen”

“Well this wasn’t exactly a date.  I showed you around the station and we ate ham sandwiches together,” Johnny said.

“Well I’m  hoping the next time we get together will be a real date,” Laurie said boldly. Then she backed off, “That is if you’re interested”

Johnny smiled.  “I’m  interested, definitely, but what about Mike?” Johnny asked.

“He’s not my type,” Laurie said sarcastically.

“You’re such a smart alec” he said.  “How about tomorrow night?” Johnny asked, “We can go bowling and then go for pizza,” Johnny suggested.

“Sounds good” Laurie smiled.  “You know where I live.  I’ll  see you around 4” she winked, as she climbed in her car.

Johnny headed back into the station with a smile on his face.  He walked back into the kitchen and he could feel the icy stare from Mike as he sat down.  Captain Stanley had already gone back to his office so it was just Mike, Marco, Chet and Roy at the table.

“I’m  going to say this one time,” Mike said his voice almost too calm, “Stay the hell away from my sister”

“Mike you have nothing to worry about.  I think you sister is great,” Johnny said quickly.

“She is not going to be another notch in your belt,” Mike said clenching his jaw.  “There are thousands of other women out there for you to date.  My sister is off limits to you”

“Well Laurie is not a child and she can make up her own mind,” Johnny said slightly annoyed.  “If she doesn’t want to see me, she will let me know,” he said, trying to sound more confident than he felt.

“I’m  not kidding Johnny.  Stay away from her,” Mike snapped as he stormed out of the room.

“Well now you’ve done it.  You’ve pissed him right off,” Chet said.  “I’ve never seen Mike so mad in all the time I’ve worked with him”

“Johnny just leave his sister alone.  There are lots of other girls you can date.  Why her?” Roy asked

“She’s different Roy.  I mean it,” Johnny said.

“You’ve said that about almost every woman you’ve dated.  This is Mike’s little sister.  Just leave her alone” Roy suggested.

Johnny frowned.  Even his own best friend had no faith in him.  Johnny put his cup in the sink and walked out the door.

The rest of the shift was very tense between Mike and Johnny.  They spoke when they had to but when they were back in the station they completely avoided each other.

The next morning Johnny grabbed his street clothes and headed to his vehicle.  He didn’t feel like sticking around.  He wanted to just get out of the pressure cooker so he decided he could shower and change at home.  He had just put his key in his door when Mike came up to him again.

“I mean it Johnny, leave Laurie alone,” he said bluntly.

“Mike I wish you would have a little faith in me.  I’d never hurt your sister,” Johnny said.

“I have watched the way you treat woman.  My sister isn’t going to be your latest conquest,” Mike snarled at him.

“See you in a couple days,” Johnny said as he backed out of his parking stall.  He wasn’t going to argue with Mike as he pulled away.  He headed home and grabbed a fast shower.  He was out in the stable cleaning up when he heard a voice outside.

“Johnny you here?” he heard a female voice.

“Yeah in here,” he yelled back.  A moment later Laurie walked in . Johnny was a little embarrassed because he was wearing a pair of cut off shorts and no shirt while he worked.  “Laurie what are you doing here?” Johnny asked, grabbing for his shirt.

“I thought I would come out and see your horses again,” she said, slowly.

“The horses hmm,” Johnny said, looking at her curiously.  “Did Mike happened to stop by your Mom’s house this morning?” Johnny asked.

Laurie sighed. “Yeah he did.  He painted you as the worst womanizer on the planet,” she said , shaking her head, “and that I would be a complete idiot to go on a date with you”

“Well Mike is just being protective of you,” Johnny said.

“I know what he thinks he is doing,  but I’m  not a child despite what he thinks, ” Laurie said heated.  “I can date who I want and I want to date you,” she said softly.

“I do too,” Johnny replied.  “I don’t know what it is but I felt a spark from the minute I laid eyes on you”

Laurie smiled, “I felt it too,” she admitted.

“So what do we do about your brother?” Johnny asked. “I have to work with him and I really don’t  want him to make things tough for you at home”

“I know his heart is in the right place, he just needs to realize I’m  25 years old now,” Laurie said frustrated.

Johnny and Laurie were standing very close together as they talked. Johnny looked at Laurie and cocked his head. “Can I kiss you?” he asked nervously.

She smiled, “I would like that,” she replied as she felt Johnny's  firm arms go around her waist.  As their lips touched for the first time they both felt a connection they had never felt before.  When they stepped back they both were grinning like Cheshire cats.

“Well I better go and shower and get dressed,” Johnny said, looking at the limited amount of clothes he was wearing.

“Mind if I wait?” Laurie asked.

“Sure, maybe we can have some lunch afterwards” Johnny suggested.  The two headed inside the ranch house.  Johnny left Laurie in the kitchen while he went to shower.  When he came back 15 minutes later she had soup and grilled cheese sandwiches ready to eat.

The two spent the entire day just sitting and chatting.  They talked like they had known each other for years.  They shared childhood memories, life goals, family plans.  They talked about it all.  It was almost 2 in the morning before either one of them realized the time.

“Oh great this will give Mike plenty to complain about,” Laurie said as she looked at her watch with concern.   “Well I guess it’s about time Big brother realized I’m  not a baby anymore”

“It’s too late for you to drive home by yourself,”  Johnny said concerned.  “I think you should stay here and drive home in the morning”

“Do you have a guest room here?” Laurie asked a little concerned about the sleeping arrangements.

“Sure do,” Johnny said.  “Don’t worry you can trust me,” he added.

“I know that Johnny,” Laurie said smiling, "and I think staying is probably the smart idea” Laurie admitted.  Johnny showed her to the guest room.  “The bedding is fresh from the last time I had Roy’s kids over for a sleep over,” he said.

Laurie looked down at her clothes. “You don’t happen to have a t-shirt I can borrow for the night, do you?” she asked.

“Sure,” Johnny said as he went to his room and grabbed one out of his dresser.  After handing the shirt to Laurie the two stood at the two doorways awkwardly.  “Well good night,” Johnny finally said, as he pulled Laurie into a gentle kiss.

“Good night,” she said as she kissed him back.  She stepped into the guest room and closed the door.  Johnny also headed to his room and closed the door behind him.

The night passed quietly at Johnny's  ranch as the two slept in their own rooms.  Johnny was up early to tend to his horses.  He was inside the barn when he heard a vehicle coming down his driveway.

Mike’s pick up slammed to a stop and he jumped out.  “Where the hell is she?” Mike yelled as he spotted Laurie’s car in front of Johnny's  house.

Johnny came out of the barn and saw Mike heading up the steps to his door.  “What are you doing here so early?” Johnny asked.

“I want to know how you could do this after I specifically told you to leave her alone,” Mike yelled.  “You meet her one day and then what you take her to bed the next”

Laurie heard the yelling outside.  She threw on her clothes and stomped to the front door.   She flung it open and stepped outside.  “How dare you,” she yelled.  “How could you think that about me?” she said incensed.

“Laurie get in your car and go home,” Mike demanded.

“Michael Patrick Stoker stop treating me like a child.  I’m  25 years old.  I’m  perfectly capable of choosing who I’ll  date,. where I  spend the night and when I should go home,” she yelled at him.

“Mom is so worried,” Mike said, “How could you do that to her?”

“I phoned mom about 20 minutes ago and apologized for not calling.  She knows where I am  and why I stayed here overnight,” Laurie said.  “She wasn’t as upset as you are”

Johnny had made his way to the porch and was standing beside Laurie.  “Mike we didn’t do anything wrong.  We talked late into the night and she stayed in the guest room” Johnny tried to explain.  “This is your sister, I would never disrespect you or her by treating her anything less than honorable”

Mike was not convinced.  “My sister Johnny.  She’s my sister.  I just can’t understand you,” he said bitterly.   Mike climbed back in his truck and pulled away.

After he left the two looked at each other. “Well that went well,” Johnny said shaking his head.  “Now he thinks I took advantage of you”

“Well you didn’t.  You were a perfect gentleman and I plan to make that perfectly clear to him if I have to hold his head underwater until he listens to me,” she said sarcastically.

“Well don’t do that.  Drowning is such an annoying call for paramedics to respond to,” Johnny said equally as sarcastic.

Why don’t we drive back to your mom’s house so I can apologize to your mother for all this,” Johnny offered.  “I really don’t want your mom to think bad about me”

“She doesn’t,” Laurie said.  “I told her that you suggested I stay because it got too late and she said that was the smart thing to do”

"Well are you going to stay for breakfast or do you have to go?” Johnny asked finally.

“I’m starved so let’s eat before I have to go,” Laurie said.  The two enjoyed their leisurely breakfast before Laurie reluctantly left for home.

Johnny spent the next day at his ranch thinking about Laurie and how Mike reacted to them being together.  He was torn.  On one hand he really cared about Laurie but on the other he didn’t want things to be tense at work all the time.

When he arrived at the station the next day he noticed a distinct chill in the air from the other crew members.  When he walked into the kitchen he watched everyone walk out.  ‘oh great Mike has filled their head with all kinds of crap’ Johnny thought.  He drank his coffee before he headed off to roll call.

When chores were handed out Johnny was not surprised to find he had drawn latrine duty.  He was almost glad for the solitude of the chore so he could think.  When he was finished he headed to the kitchen to grab some more coffee.  As he sat down he was glared at by Marco, Chet and especially Mike.

“Would you guys knock it off,” Johnny finally said. “You are acting so damn childish it’s annoying”

“You're the one that took advantage of my sister.  I’ll  treat you like the trash I think you are,” Mike spat at him.

Johnny shook his head. “Roy you don’t believe this crap, do you?” Johnny asked, looking for some moral support from his best friend.  “I told you to leave Mike’s sister alone,” Roy reminded him.

“Great now even you think the worst. This is ridiculous,” Johnny said as he headed back to the dorm.

The next few weeks were so tense at the station Johnny started to contemplate requesting a transfer.  He knew things would eventually settle down, but he was getting tired of the cold shoulder.   He and Laurie continued to date privately, choosing to keep their personal life out of the public eye.  The two were growing closer and closer.  They both knew they were falling in love but neither one had made the final leap to actually say the words.

Mike knew that Johnny and Laurie were still dating but he had no idea how serious the two were getting.

The fireman’s picnic was fast approaching and Johnny had asked Laurie to attend with him.  She was hesitant because she knew Mike would be there.

“Come on sweetheart . We have to stop hiding.  I’m  not afraid to tell everyone how much I care about you,” Johnny said, trying to convince her to go.

“What about Michael?” Laurie asked, “Aren’t you afraid he’s going to make a scene?”

“Well I can make my own scene if he really wants,” Johnny said sarcastically. “I think my scene might be more memorable,” Johnny joked.

“You're impossible you know,” Laurie said, shaking her head.

“Yep and that’s what you adore about me,” Johnny said, raising his eyebrows.

“Yep sure is,” she agreed as the two shared a tender kiss.

“Fine I’ll go to the picnic but if the fireworks between you and Mike are more exciting than the planned display don’t say I didn’t warn you,” she said.

“I’ll take my chances” Johnny smiled.  “With you by my side what could possibly go wrong”

Laurie just laughed.

Finally the picnic day arrived and Johnny came to the Stoker house early to pick Laurie up.  He was welcomed warmly by Mrs. Stoker as he always was.  “Nice to see you mom,” he said as he kissed her gently on the cheek.

“You two have fun today and don’t let Mike get to you.  He can be so stubborn sometimes,” she said shaking her head as she thought of her son. “I want you to know Johnny I think you and Laurie together is a good thing”

“Thanks,” Johnny said smiling broadly,  “and don’t worry about Mike, we’ll be fine” Johnny assured her.  Soon the two pulled up to the park and they were collecting their stuff from the backseat.  Johnny leaned over and kissed Laurie before they got out of the Rover.

“What was that for?” she asked.

“Just because I wanted to,” he smirked.

She leaned back and kissed him.  “Well I wanted to also” she grinned.

The two walked hand in hand to the large crowd of firemen and their families.  They didn’t feel exactly welcome at the Station 51 gathering so they spread their blanket out a short distance away beside a tall tree. The two sat back on the blanket and just started to chat together.  The feelings between them were so strong that they didn’t need to talk to feel close.  Johnny was laying back against a tree with Laurie right beside him.  She was brushing the hair out of his eyes.   He looked at her and smiled,  “I love you,” he said softly.

Her mouth dropped open.  “What did you say Johnny?” she asked.

“I love you Laurie Stoker,” Johnny repeated himself.  “I have been wanting to say that to you for a long time now.”

“I love you too Johnny Gage,” Laurie replied.

Johnny pulled Laurie into a gentle kiss as the two beamed at each other.    “Want to go for a walk?” Johnny asked.  Laurie nodded as he pulled her up on her feet.  They walked hand in hand off towards the playground.

Laurie sat down on one of the swings and Johnny started giving her a push.  “Not so high,” she squealed.  “I get sea sick easy,” she reminded him.

Johnny laughed as he slowed down the swing.  The two were so caught up in their own little world they never noticed anyone around them.  “Why don’t we walk down by the lake?” Johnny suggested.

The two headed off further away from the main gathering.  The lake was quiet because it was too cool that day for swimmers.  Johnny had his arm wrapped around Laurie’s shoulders as they walked slowly down the pier.  They had made it about half way down when they heard pounding feet behind them.  Suddenly a very large man came rushing up.  “Give me your purse and your wallet,” he demanded, as he held a knife at them.  Johnny quickly took out his wallet and handed it to him. the man grabbed the cash and flung the wallet down on the ground.  “Easy, just take it easy you can have them,” Johnny said, not wanting anything to happen to Laurie.

Laurie was struggling with the straps of her purse because she had it crisscrossed over her shoulders.  “Come on, come on,” the man said, as he was growing impatient.  Johnny could see by his eyes that he was stoned on something.  He pushed the knife closer to Laurie’s chest as he started to become more impatient.  Johnny saw the blade nearing Laurie’s body.  He suddenly threw himself at the man.   He grabbed for the knife and yelled for Laurie to run.  Johnny and the man were struggling wildly as Laurie sprinted off to get some help.

She ran as fast as she could looking back continually to see Johnny valiantly fighting to keep the man from going after her.  “Run Laurie, Run,” Johnny yelled, as the life and death struggle continued.

Laurie ran down the hill towards the picnic.  She was screaming as loud as she could.  “We need help.  He’s going to kill him,” she was yelling hysterically.

The crew from Station 51 spun around and heard the blood curdling screams.  “you have to help Johnny, he’s going to kill him,” she said, trying to catch her breath.

“Where?” Roy demanded, jumping to his feet.

“The pier.  He’s on the pier,” Laurie said panting heavily.  Roy, Marco, Chet and several others ran as quick as they could back over the hill.  They were stunned to see Johnny lying on the pier.  Blood flowing from his body.

Roy ran up to him and saw the knife wounds. “Call for a squad and an ambulance,” he yelled, as he dropped down beside his partner and began to assess him.

Laurie had run back over the hill the minute she could catch her breath.  “NO!,” she screamed hysterically as she saw Johnny's  still body lying on the ground.

Beth caught her before she could get any closer.  “Let them work,” she said gently as she held Laurie back.  Dr. Brackett and Dixie were soon on the scene assisting as much as they could with no equipment.

“Where the hell is that squad?” Kel said impatiently.  “We need to get some fluid in him soon.  He’s loosing blood too fast”

Finally the paramedics from squad 99 came rushing over.  Kel took control of Johnny's  care and finally he was readied for transport.  Laurie insisted on riding in the front of the ambulance as they rushed him to Rampart.

The hours ticked away as the crew paced endlessly waiting for news on their injured crew mate.

Mike saw how upset Laurie was and suggested that maybe she should go home and get some rest.

“How can you even think that?” she snapped at him. “Want to know why Johnny is in there fighting for his life? Well I’m going to tell you,” she said, brushing away her tears.  “He’s in there because I couldn’t get my damn purse off my shoulders quick enough and that doped up idiot turned the knife on me,” she said, shaking her head.  “Johnny grabbed his arm and told me to run,” she said as the tears continued to fall.  “He saved my life”

Mike was stunned.  “I guess I owe him a thanks,” he said finally.

“I think we all do” Beth added, looking at her husband.

Laurie was inconsolable.  She wouldn’t be placated with false pep talk.  She wanted to hear from the doctor herself that Johnny was going to be okay.  Several hours later Kelly Brackett walked into the lounge.

“Well Johnny is one heck of a fighter,” he said.  “We managed to stop the bleeding and are pumping him full of blood to replace what he lost,” he told the gathered group. “I think he should be okay”

“Can I see him?” Roy asked.

“He’s been asking to see Laurie,” Kel said, looking over at the upset woman who was standing with Beth Stoker.

“Let’s go,” she said, as she sprinted ahead of the doctor.  Laurie found herself at Johnny's  bed a few minutes later.

“Hi,” Johnny said softly as he saw Laurie looking down at him.

“Hi yourself,” she replied.  “I told you the fireworks would pale in comparison to you” she teased.

“Guess you were right,” Johnny said weakly.  “Are you okay?” he asked concerned.  “That guy didn’t hurt you, did he?”

“I’m fine,” she assured him.  “I just want you to take it easy,” she said as she leaned down and kissed Johnny on the forehead.

“kay, I will,” he said quietly.

“You sleep now. We will have plenty of time to talk after you get some rest,” she said.   Johnny gently squeezed her hand as he closed his eyes again.

In a matter of a couple minutes Johnny was sound asleep.  Laurie was only allowed to stay for a few minutes before she was ushered out so Johnny could be moved to the ICU.  She made her way back to the lounge.

“How is he doing?” Roy asked, watching her walk in.  “He looks so pale,” she replied.

“Well that’s normal when someone has lost a lot of blood,” Roy tried to assure her.

“Know what his first concern was?” she said shaking her head.  “he wanted to know if I was okay”

Mike had been very quiet through most of the conversation.  He listened to his sister talk and he was beginning to see things a lot more clear.

There was no point in everyone staying at the hospital because Johnny wasn’t going to be allowed anymore visitors until the next day.  Everyone reluctantly headed home, promising to return the next day to see their friend.

Laurie refused to leave.  She finally convinced Dixie to let her rest in the doctor’s lounge after much intense persuasion.  Mike could not get her to leave no matter how hard he tried to talk her into going home for a few hours.

“Mike you can talk until you are blue in the face, I’m  staying here until I talk to Johnny in the morning so you might as well go home now,” she said.

“Come on Laurie.  You heard Dr. Brackett,  Johnny is going to sleep for the night.  There’s no point in staying,” he said trying to coax her.

“Well maybe not for you but there is for me, ” she said.  “I’ll  see you tomorrow,” she said effectively ended their conversation as she pulled the blanket up on her shoulders and closed her eyes.

The next morning Laurie was the first one into Johnny's  room.  He was much more coherent and was able to greet her warmly.

“Hey there,” he said smiling.

“Well hey yourself,” she said,  as she sat down in the chair beside his bed.

“I’m  sorry the picnic didn’t end up like I planned, ” he apologized.  “I really wanted to make it memorable for you”

“Well that you did,” she laughed slightly.  “I don’t think I can ever forget what you did for me”

Johnny was about to reply when the door swung open again.  In walked Mike, Marco, Chet, Hank and Roy.

“Hey Johnny how you doing?” Roy asked, coming closer to the bed.

“Well I feel a little better than yesterday,” Johnny admitted.  “Like I was telling Laurie I was sorry yesterday didn’t turn out like I was hoping”

“Well I’m  just glad you’re going to be okay,” Mike said.  “and I want to thank you for saving my sister’s life.  I don’t know how to thank you” Mike added.

“I do,” Johnny said as he tried to sit up a little straighter.    “Roy can you hand me my jacket from the cupboard over there”

Roy did what Johnny asked and handed him the bloody jacket.  Johnny fished through the pocket and smiled with relief.  “Good it’s still here,” he said.

“What’s still there?” Chet asked, curious.

“You’ll find out in a minute,” Johnny said.  Johnny reached out and grabbed Laurie’s hand.  “I was hoping we could do this yesterday with all our friends around, but I think this will have to do,” he began.  “Laurie you have captured my heart and I feel so blessed to have you in my life.  You bring your sarcasm, your laughter and your love.  I feel whole when we’re  together. I love you with ever ounce of my being.   I would like to know if you would do me the great honor of becoming my wife?” Johnny asked sincerely, as he looked into Laurie’s face.

Laurie was speechless for just a moment before her face opened into a wide grin.  “I love you Johnny so much.  We have had to deal with an obnoxious brother” she looked at Mike, “doubting friends” as she glanced at the others gathered in the room, “and a lot of pessimism, but we have weathered it all together.  I would be thrilled and honoured to become Mrs. John Gage,” she said as she held her hand still so Johnny could slip the ring he had on her finger. “I love you Laurie,”  Johnny said as he kissed her gently.

Johnny and Laurie looked over to Mike.  No one had said a word. “Well Mike you wanted to know if there was anything you could do for me.  All I want from you is your blessing,” Johnny said, holding his breath as he held Laurie’s hand..

Mike paused for a moment as he looked at the newly engaged couple.  “Johnny I have been so wrong about you that I’m  ashamed of myself.  You have treated my sister with such kindness and love that I should be thanking you for taking such good care of her.  Yes of course I’ll  give you my blessing” Mike said warmly, “Welcome to the family”.

Johnny smiled, “thanks Mike,” he said as the two shook hands.  “Congratulations Laurie” Mike said as he pulled his sister into a warm hug.

“Congratulations Laurie,” Roy said as he hugged her also.  “Congratulations Junior.  I can’t believe it.  You’re going to be a married man”

Johnny nodded.  “I would love it if you would stand up for me” Johnny asked Roy.

“I would be honoured,” Roy said. “You just wait.  This is going to be one very memorable wedding”

Laurie looked down at Johnny who was fighting to stay awake.  “I think we need to talk about wedding plans later.  The groom to be needs his nap,” she smiled.

The guys all gave Laurie congratulatory hugs and then they all quietly slipped out of the room.    The next few days were quiet for Johnny as he recovered from his knife wounds.  Finally he was released from the hospital.  Roy picked him up and took him home.  Laurie was in court that day and not able to do it.

When Johnny and Roy drove home together they finally had a chance to talk alone.  “You nervous about getting married?” Roy asked.

“I’m so at peace with this,” Johnny said. “Laurie is the one I have been waiting for.  It just feels so right”

“I know that feeling.  When I married Joanne I felt like it was fate.  We were destined to be together.  I think you and Laurie are the same way,” Roy commented.

“I think you’re right,” Johnny said. “Who would have thought the confirmed bachelor would ever get married” Johnny laughed.

Johnny was back at work within a couple weeks and things settled back to normal.  Wedding plans were starting to come together and Johnny was quite happy to just sit back and nod as the ladies put together all the details.  He shook his head many times as the minute details were passed before his eyes.

“Don’t you care what colour everything will be?” Beth asked, “or what they will be serving for supper?”

“Beth all I care about is that when I look down that aisle I see Laurie heading my way.  The rest of the stuff is just scenery filler as far as I’m  concerned,” Johnny said.

“Spoken like a typical man,” Beth said smirking at him.

“So true,” Johnny said.  “Look I’m  sure whatever you all plan is going to be wonderful.  I’m  handling the most important detail,” Johnny said.

“What would that be?” Beth asked.

“The honeymoon,” Johnny grinned.

That made Beth laugh even harder.  “So where are two going for your honeymoon?” she asked.

“Can’t tell you,” Johnny said, “it’s a secret”

“I hope it’s some place romantic,” Beth said, thinking back to her Hawaii honeymoon she had with Mike.

“I can assure you it’s someplace that Laurie is going to love,” Johnny  told her.

The wedding day finally arrived and everyone was so excited.  Jennifer DeSoto was dashing from room to room at the Gage Ranch as she showed off her flower girl dress to anyone who would look at it.

The wedding was being held at the ranch.  The whole back yard had been transpired into a magical floral garden.   Laurie was nervous as Beth, Joanne and her mother fussed over her dress.  She was wearing the same dress her mother had worn when she married Laurie’s father 35 years earlier.  It was a very elegant, ivory coloured dress with antique lace and pearls.  She looked stunning in the gown.

Johnny was in his room trying to remember how to breathe.  Roy, Mike, Chet and Marco were all changing into their suits.  They could see that the groom was definitely stressed out.

“You know something Roy, I was perfectly calm until this morning,” Johnny said, “now it feels like my stomach has a flock of geese flying around in it”

Roy chuckled, “that about describes how most grooms feel on their wedding day”

“Well I just want to get this show on the road.  I hate waiting,” Johnny said impatiently.

“Well if I know my sister she’s probably as anxious to get things going as you are,” Mike said.  “I know Beth said she was pretty nervous too”

Chet looked at his watch, “Well last chance to back out,” he joked, “you have 5 minutes to run for the hills”

“Not a chance, Chet,” Johnny said, “I can’t wait for Laurie to be my wife”

There was a knock at the door and the priest stepped inside.  “You ready?” he asked as he looked at his watch.

“Yes,” Johnny said trying to swallow as his mouth suddenly felt like it was drier than the Sahara Desert.

The men followed the priest out to the back yard.  Mike went to escort his mother down the aisle and then went back to wait with Laurie.  He was walking her down the aisle as well.

Finally the music began.  Johnny turned to face down the aisle.  He was anxious to see Laurie.    Beth Stoker, Joanne DeSoto and two other friends of Laurie’s proceeded her down the aisle.  Jennifer DeSoto was just ahead of Laurie sprinkling the carpet with flower pedals.  Jennifer went and stood beside her mother as the music changed.

Johnny's  hands were sweaty as he waited, and then finally he saw his bride.  His heart skipped a beat as he saw her walking slowly towards him.  She was smiling widely as she was holding onto  Mike.  The two proceeded down the aisle.   Finally Laurie was beside Johnny.  Mike leaned over and kissed her on the cheek, he whispered softly in her ear, “be happy, I love you”

Laurie kissed his cheek back, “I will Michael and I love you too”

Mike linked Laurie’s hand with Johnny's and the two turned to face the priest.  Johnny whispered to her, “you're beautiful”   She only smiled as she waited anxiously for the ceremony to begin.

The ceremony continued with blessings, prayers and music.  When the priest got to the part of the ceremony where he asked if anyone objected to the two joining together, both Laurie and Johnny looked over at Mike. “I have nothing to say,” he said in mock defense. Everyone got a good laugh out of that as the priest continued. Finally the words everyone was waiting for were spoken.

“It is my great pleasure to introduce to you Mr. and Mrs. John Gage,” the priest said happily as Johnny and Laurie grinned at each other.

The reception was a wonderfully relaxing gathering of friends and family.  Johnny and Laurie spent the evening visiting with friends as they accepted many well wishes.  Finally it was time for toasts and speeches.

Chet was the MC for the ceremony.  He got many good laughs, mostly at Johnny's  expense.  Finally he called Roy over to give the toast to the groom.

“Johnny we have been friends for several years.  You have become a member of my family.  We have been through a lot together both good and sometimes not so good times.  When you told me you were dating Mike’s sister I thought you were crazy.  Who the heck wants to tick off the man who lets you have water at a fire.  But somehow it was meant to be.  I have seen you change in so many amazing ways.  Laurie somehow has completed you.  I think you two will  have a life time of love and incredible moments to look forward to.  So I would like to propose a toast to my best friend, to my partner, my brother and to Laurie’s new husband.  Here’s to you Johnny,” Roy said as he raised a glass in toast.

Mike took the podium next.  “I am supposed to give a toast to my sister,” he began.  “Well most of you know I’m not much of a talker but I’ll do my best.  When Laurie and Johnny started to date to say I was unhappy was an understatement.  I now know I was wrong.  Laurie has a sparkle in her eyes in have never seen before.  She is genuinely happy and I know it is John that has made her that way,” Mike said, smiling at Johnny.  “I want only the best for my sister and John.  May you two have a lifetime of joy, many happy memories and may all your problems be small”  Mike looked at his sister, “Here’s to my baby sister, Laurie Gage, I love you and be happy” he said as he raised his glass in toast to his sister.

Finally Johnny got up to speak, “I really don’t know why Laurie’s isn’t up here instead of me.  She’s the one that talks for a living” he smirked at his new wife.  “But I will give it a whirl” He began, “Laurie and I would like to thank you all for coming to share this amazing day with us.  We especially would like to thank our close friends for all their help organizing this day.  Roy, Joanne, Beth, Mike and especially Mrs. Stoker , er I mean Mom.  You have all been so great making this day happen” Johnny continued.  “I stand here today a lucky man to have married such a wonderful lady.  Mike I promise you here and now I will always take good care of her” Johnny raised his glass.  “Here’s to incredible friendships, great families, and to my new bride.  Thank you all for making this a day to treasure forever”

Johnny and Laurie finally were on their way to their honeymoon destination.  Laurie had no idea where they were going.

An hour after they left Johnny pulled over and parked the rover.  “So are you curious where I am taking you?” he asked.

“Very,” Laurie admitted.

“Well I know how much you have enjoyed learning to ride so I arranged for our two horses to be brought to a stable just outside of the city and we are riding to a cabin about 10 miles up in the hills,” Johnny said.  “It’s private, secluded and all ours for the next week,” he said smiling.

“Sounds perfect,” Laurie said, “but I think I need to change,” she commented as she looked down at her wedding gown.

“Already got that taken care of.  Tonight Mrs. Gage we are going to a hotel.  Tomorrow we will go to our cabin retreat,” he said as he pulled away from the curb.  Soon he was pulling into the parking lot of a very elegant hotel.  When they reached their hotel room Johnny scooped Laurie into his arms as he carried her into the room.

“Tonight is the first night of our lives together,” he said as he laid her on the side of the bed.  Their wedding night was magical as they finally became one as they consummated their love.

The next week was equally as magical as they enjoyed the privacy and solitude of the cabin.  They rode during the day, fished, hiked and just relished in the private time they had with each other.  When they finally were forced to leave their cabin retreat, they were both a little sad to see it end.

“Well Mrs. Gage it’s time to get back to reality again,” Johnny said as he and Laurie packed up their clothes.

“Can’t we just hide here for a while longer.  I don’t want to go back to the real world just yet.  I love being here with you,” she said as she smiled at her husband.

“Sorry kiddo, unfortunately we have to get back to our ranch.  We both have to work in a couple days and I think we need to get you all settled in at our home,” Johnny said.

“Our ranch, boy that sounds good,” Laurie said, thinking about the home they were now going to share.

Finally they were on their way home.  They pulled back into the driveway to the ranch and headed to the house.  “We better get the horses unloaded first,” Johnny said.  “Then we can tackle the house”

The horses were quickly unloaded and put into their stalls.  Then the pair headed to the house.  Laurie unlocked the door and before she could step inside Johnny scooped her in his arms.  “Need to make this official,” he said as he carried her inside.

The two were shocked when they were greeted by a sparkling clean house, complete with a “Welcome Home” Banner strung across the wall.  “Looks like Roy and Joanne have been here,” Johnny said.

They walked down to the master bedroom and found that it was also re-arranged.  Laurie saw the bureau from her old bedroom in the room as well as a few of her mementos on the dresser.

“I think all our friends and family have been here,” she said as she cuddled her favorite teddy bear from her childhood.

The two spent the rest of the day organizing things to their own liking.  As much as they appreciated the efforts of their friends and families they wanted to put things away themselves.

Finally work loomed and Johnny headed back to the station.  The day before had been so hectic that other than a quick phone call to Laurie’s mom and one to Roy they had pretty much stuck to getting neglected errands done.

When Johnny walked into the station he was greeted warmly. “So how’s the married man doing?” Chet asked, as he watched Johnny walk in.

“Just great.,” Johnny said, smiling widely.  “Couldn’t be better”

“So I take it you two had a great honeymoon,” Roy asked.

“It was incredible,” Johnny said remembering the cabin getaway.

“Where do you two go?  Hawaii,  the Bahamas, I hope it was some place romantic” Marco asked.

All the guys were in the locker room changing as Johnny was talking.  “We went to a cabin in the woods,” Johnny said. “It was the most incredible retreat.  Laurie and I had the place to ourselves.  We fished, hiked and sat around a campfire.  It was amazing,” Johnny said, as he described their vacation.

“I can’t believe my sister liked something like that,” Mike said with disbelief.

“Not only did she like it, but she already booked it for our first anniversary,” Johnny said as he closed his locker.

The months flew by as married life agreed with Johnny.    Roy noticed the difference with his partner and was pleased to see him so happy.

One day Johnny was waiting at the nurses desk for Roy to pick him up after transporting a patient to the hospital.   He and Dixie were chatting lightly when a couple of nurses came sauntering up.    “Johnny you haven’t made a single pass at me in months.  I think you’re losing your touch,” one of the nurses said raising her eyebrows.

Johnny shook his head. “Not looking anymore,” he said, holding up his wedding band.  “I have all I need at home now,” he said as he closed the drug box.

“You’re married?” the nurse said, shocked.

“Yep, been married now for almost 7 months,” Johnny said winking at Dixie.  “Seven wonderful months”

“I don’t believe it.  Johnny Gage married” the nurse said as the pair walked away.

Johnny turned to Dixie, “I guess your rumour mill isn’t working as well as it used to.  That should be old news by now,” he smirked.

“You look happy,” Dixie observed.

“I am.  I just can’t believe how much I love being married.  I never thought I would like to be accountable to someone else but its different.  Laurie and I just work together like a team.  She does her thing and I do mine, and at the end of the day we are just in sync with each other” Johnny explained.

Roy walked up and ended the conversation as the two headed off to another call.  The call was to a structure fire.  By the time Roy and Johnny arrived it was already a three alarm fire.

“Roy, John make a sweep of the first floor,” Captain Stanley yelled to his paramedics.  The two grabbed their gear and headed into the fiery blaze.  It was incredibly hot going as the two stumbled through smoke that was so thick they could barely see their hands in front of their faces.  They checked all the rooms on the main floor before the HT in Roy’s hand crackled.

“Evacuate immediately” the radio transmission said.  The two acknowledged the transmission as they sprinted back towards the entrance.  The ceiling was starting to buckle as they ran full tilt to the door.  They were almost at the entrance when the ceiling finally came down.  The two were immediately pinned under the debris.

“Engine 51 to HT 51 come in,” Captain Stanley called repeatedly to his missing crew members.  He was distressed when there was no reply forthcoming.  “Marco, Chet check the entrance way.  See if you can find them,” Cap said as he notified the Battalion chief about his missing crew members.

Chet and Marco headed back inside the inferno, calling their friends names.    The smoke was dense and the air hot as they worked.  “Over here, I found something,” Marco yelled, as he saw a boot sticking out of the debris.  He and Chet radioed their captain that they found them and then worked as quickly as they could to unbury the pair.    Finally they were able to see both unconscious paramedics.

The two paramedics from squad 16 came in and helped treat Roy and Johnny before transporting them to the hospital.

The dreaded phone call soon happened for Laurie Gage as she answered the phone in the wee hours of the night.  “Laurie, it’s Mike,” he began, “Johnny and Roy were injured at a blaze tonight.  You probably should come down to the hospital as soon as you can,” he said.

“How bad it he?” Laurie asked.

“We don’t know.  They were both unconscious when they were brought out.  We are just waiting to hear now,” Mike told her.

“I’m on my way,” she said as she climbed out of bed and quickly got dressed.   20 minutes later Laurie found herself in unfamiliar territory, standing among other firemen waiting for news on her husband.   Joanne came rushing in a few minutes later.

She spotted Laurie right away.  “Any news?” she asked as she hugged the other woman.

“Nothing yet,” Laurie said as she paced anxiously.

“This is the worst part of being married to a fireman,” Joanne said. “The phone calls and the waiting”

“Johnny and I talked about this, but I guess you never really prepare for it,” Laurie said nervously.

“No you never do” Joanne agreed.

An hour later Dr. Brackett came into the room.  He headed right for the two wives where were waiting together.  “Well your husbands have the hardest heads in the department.  They both have minor concussions and some pretty good bruises other than that they are going to be fine,” he said.

The audible sigh could be heard through the room.  “Can we see them?” Joanne asked.

“Sure, we have them in the same treatment room because we are so busy,” Kel said, “Come with me”

Laurie and Joanne followed Kel down the hall to the treatment room.  He pushed open the door and motioned for the two to enter.   Joanne went to Roy’s side and Laurie to Johnny's .

“Well you two sure know how to make for an exciting night,” Joanne teased.

“Sorry honey, I guess Johnny and I forgot to duck,” Roy joked.

“You sure you’re okay?” Laurie asked, looking at all the bandages on Johnny's  arms and his cheek.

“Yeah, I’m fine.  Can’t hurt this hard head of mine,” Johnny laughed lightly.

Laurie suddenly felt very light headed.  “I was so scared, I uh, . . .” she didn’t finish her sentence as her knees buckled.  She would have hit the floor if Dr. Brackett hadn’t caught her.

“Laurie,” Johnny called to his wife, as he pushed himself off the treatment table.  “Here put her down here” he motioned to the spot he had just vacated.

Kel laid Laurie down on the table and began to determine why she fainted.  Joanne pulled a stool over so Johnny could sit because he didn’t look too steady on his feet himself.  “What is wrong?” Johnny asked nervously.

“Joanne would you mind stepping out for a few minutes while I examine her?” Kel asked.    She nodded and headed back to the waiting room.   She went over to find Mike.  “Roy and Johnny okay?” Mike asked.

“I think they're going to be fine" Joanne paused, "Mike, Laurie fainted in the treatment room” Joanne told him.  “I am sure it’s because of nerves, but Dr. Brackett is checking her out now”

“She fainted?” Mike was surprised. “Laurie has never fainted in her life.  She never lets nerves get to her”

“Well I am sure Dr Brackett will come and talk to you soon,” Joanne said, as she took her seat again.

Back in the treatment room Kel looked over at Dixie, “Let’s run some blood tests to make sure there isn’t anything, but I am thinking it was probably just a case of nerves” Kel said.  Johnny stayed with his wife as he waited for the test results to come back.  She started to come around a few minutes after she fainted.  She was very disoriented as she looked around.

“Laurie, you okay?” Johnny asked anxiously.

“I am supposed to be asking you that question,” she said, not sure why she was lying on a treatment table.   “What happened?” she asked.

“You fainted,” Johnny said.  “Dr Brackett is checking you out to make sure you are okay”

“Oh this is ridiculous,” Laurie said, sitting up.  “I can’t believe I fainted”

“Take it easy honey.  Let’s just make sure there isn’t anything wrong” Johnny said, as he leaned against the treatment table.

“Why don’t we change places.  You look like you need to lie down and I'll sit on that stool” Laurie offered.

“You just keep that butt of yours on that table.  With this headache of mine, I don’t know if I would be able to catch you in time if you tried another swan dive,” Johnny teased.

The two talked with Roy quietly for the next few minutes as they waited for Kel to come back.  He walked back in holding some lab results.

“Well Johnny, Roy your lab work looks fine.  I think one night of observation and you two can head home tomorrow,” he said.

“What about Laurie?” Johnny asked.  “Why did she faint?”

“Well Laurie I think your condition is going to take a lot longer for it to go away,” he smirked.  “I would say about 9 months”

Johnny looked at Laurie.  “Nine months?”

“That’s right, congratulations Johnny, Laurie.   You two are going to parents.  You’re pregnant” Kel said smiling.

Johnny didn’t care about his concussion at that moment as he got to his feet and pulled his wife into a warm embrace.  “We’re going to have a baby” he smiled.

“Just like we wanted” she added.  “I love you Johnny,” she said as she felt her husband’s strong arms around her.

“I love you too Laurie Gage,” Johnny said.   Johnny turned to Roy, “I’m going to be a Daddy”

Roy smiled widely.  “Congratulations Johnny.  You too Laurie”

“Well I think you're okay to go home in the morning also Laurie.  The reason you fainted is because your iron level is low and you are a little anemic couple that with the stress tonight and you have a perfectly good reason to faint.     We're going to give you some vitamin supplements and send you off in the morning” Kel said.  “The three of you rest well.  I’ll see you in the morning”

Kel headed back to the waiting room to find Joanne.  When he walked in a second time Mike was at his side instanlty.  “Is Laurie okay?” he demanded to know.

“I think you need to talk to your sister.  I’m not at liberty to discuss her condition,” Kel said.

He looked at Joanne.  “Johnny and Roy are being admitted for the night.  You can see Roy for a few minutes before I send you all home”

“What about Laurie?” Joanne asked.

“I’m going to put her in a room with Johnny.  They can both go home in the morning,” Kel said, “And before you ask, yes you can see her Mike”

Soon the semi-private room was filled with anxious firemen and one very relieved wife.  “Laurie are you okay?” Mike asked anxiously.

Johnny was holding Laurie’s hand as he answered for her.  “Nothing that 9 months won’t cure,” he said smiling.

“You’re pregnant?” Mike asked.

“Yes Michael.  I’m going to have a baby,” Laurie said smiling widely.

Mike looked at Johnny and Laurie.  “You asked me a long ago to give my blessing to you two getting married.  I think God just gave his blessing by giving you this baby.  I'm so thrilled for you both”

Joanne looked at the parents to be and saw that they both were falling asleep.  “Get all the rest you can now, because in a few months your lives will never be the same” she said with a smirk.

Joanne kissed her husband good bye and everyone slipped out of the room.  Mike lingered back for a moment, and peeked in the room.  He could see Johnny sleeping with Laurie’s bed close to his.  The two were holding hands as they slept.

“Be happy Laurie” Mike said softly.  He felt like the torch had been passed as he now knew that Johnny would be the one to take care of his sister.  They were now a family with a baby on the way.  It was time to let go and let them take care of each other.  “Take care of her Johnny, I am counting on you” Mike whispered as he slowly closed the door.  He knew deep in his heart that Johnny would honour his promise and always take care of his sister.
