“Is Joe available?” Kel asked Dixie.
“He’s on his way down.”
“Okay. Let’s get -“ He was cut off by the bay station radio.
“Rampart, this is Squad 51.”
The voice on the radio belonged to Captain Stanley this time. Dixie hoped that meant that Johnny was already on his way in with the woman, and that the man was now accessible.
“Go ahead, 51,” Kel responded.
“Rampart, we’ve had an additional incident at this scene. Victim number 1 is in the ambulance. Her breathing is still assisted. ETA is less than 2 minutes.”
There was an almost imperceptible pause before the Captain continued.
“Be advised we no longer have a paramedic available for transport. The victim will be arriving with ambulance attendants only.”
Dixie heard the surprise in the doctor’s voice when he replied.
“Negative on that, 51. We’ll send additional medical help to your scene, but you cannot transport your victim without a paramedic.”
She watched his surprise turn to something darker when they heard Stanley tell someone, “Get going. Now!”
“51, I repeat, a paramedic must accompany this victim.”
“And I repeat, Rampart. That is no longer possible. The ambulance has left the scene and should be at your doors momentarily.”
