Ladies and gentlemen, the story you're about to read is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.

This is the city, Los Angeles, California. I work here, I carry a badge.

It was 08:10...we were working the C-shift out of station 51. My name's Gage. I'm a fireman/paramedic with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

We were just pouring ourselves a cup of coffee when were called to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Johnston. Mrs. Johnston was experiencing chest pains.

We immediately placed her on oxygen and DeSoto set about hooking her up to a monitor so Rampart General Hospital could have a look at what was going on. DeSoto, that's my partner, Roy DeSoto.

Early, Doctor Joe Early asked us for just the facts, so DeSoto quickly took Mrs. Johnston's vital signs and relayed them to me so I could pass them on to Early. He informed us to administer 5 cc's of sodium bicarb and transport immediately.

After reassuring Mr. and Mrs. Johnston that everything was going to be fine, we loaded Mrs. Johnston into the back of the waiting Mayfair ambulance. Roy hopped in with her, while I followed in the squad.

At 11:30 we found ourselves walking out of treatment room two after our second run of the day and running straight into the relieved Mr. Johnston. He explained to us that his wife was doing well and thanked us for our help.

A smile spread across my face as I told the elderly man that was great news. I also informed him that he didn't need to thank us. We save lives. That's our job.
